Walter Reed attended the University of Maine from 1940 to 1943 before joining the Army where he served three and a half years in Japan and the Philippines. He played golf at the University of Maine, winning the Maine State Intercollegiate Championship in 1942 and 1943. He also won the Maine Junior Championship in 1941 and 1942 and the Maine Open Amateur in 1942. He was inducted into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame on August 16, 1996. He received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Maine-Presque Isle in 1985.
