Perhaps one of the most successful woman athletes ever to compete at the University of Maine, Turbyne was selected as a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team in the shot put. She was unable to participate that year due to the boycott. However, she placed second in the shot put at the AAU World University Games in Mexico City and was twice named to select teams that competed in Russia. At one time she held two world weightlifting titles. She was an ECAC Champion, a MAIAW Champion and an All-American in the late 1970's. She finished third at the AIAW National Championship in 1979 and still holds the school record in the shot put.
