    Benefactor
The single-greatest benefactor of University of Maine Athletics, Harold Alfond contributed more than $7 million to the program during his life and his name adorns two varsity athletic facilities - Alfond Arena, home of our men's and women's ice hockey and basketball teams and Alfond Stadium, home of the Black Bear football program. He also has several scholarships endowed at the University. His leadership and support made possible the addition of the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center in 2005 and, just prior to his death, he established the Alfond Challenge for Football, which matches, dollar for dollar, any funds raised in support of the program on an annual basis. Mr. Alond passed away in November, 2007 and his impact on the state and region continues through the world of The Harold Alfond Foundation, which is one of the oldest in the state and contributes to more than 100 charities each year.
