University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Jim Smoragiewicz was one of the first of the versatile swimmers who carried the University of Maine men's swim team to a place of prominence in New England. During his four years at the University, he established six school records including records in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke and the 200 yard fresstyle. His 200 yard individual medley and 800 yard freestyle relay team records still hold today. In most dual meets he swam in three events and in championships meets he competed in six events. Following graduation he coached swimming at Syracuse and the University of Toledo.
