Skip Chappelle is the only Black Bear basketball player ever to be selected as a Little All-American, achieving that distinction in 1961. As a player, Skip led the black Bears to their two most successful seasons in history; 19-4 in 1959-60 and 18-5 in 1960-61. At one time he held 12 individual school records. Skip coached the Black Bears from 1971-88 and compiled almost 220 wins. He was only the fourth active NCAA I coach in New England to achieve 200 wins.
