University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Alton Bell lettered in four sports at the University of Maine between 1933 and 1937: baseball, indoor track, outdoor track and riflery. He was a track legend, winning the Maine State, New England and National titles in the javelin. Between his freshman year and senior year, he was a member of both the baseball and outdoor track teams simultaneously, serving as captain of both in the spring of 1937. In baseball he holds one of the highest career batting averages at .406. Following graduation he went on to play in the Boston Red Sox Farm System.
