Stump Merrill played four years of baseball and three years of football at the University of Maine. He was a Maine All-State selection in baseball in 1965 and 1966 as well as an All-Yankee Conference Selection in 1965 and 1966. Merrill was the starting catcher for the 1964 Black Bears' College World Series team. Following graduation he signed a minor league baseball contract. He returned to Maine in 1973 as an assistant for baseball, basketball and football. In 1990, Merrill became the Manager of the New York Yankees and served in several coaching and front office roles for the organization.
