Black, captain of the 1933-1934 indoor track team, was also a standout in cross country and outdoor track. The Black Bears finished third in the 1932 and 1933 New England championships. The team was seventh in the 1934 IC4A championships and 12th in 1932. He was the national champion in the 400-meter dash in 1935, setting a US record in the event at the time. In 1935, Black was the IC4A champion in the 800-meters, setting a meet record of 1:54.5. Un 1933, he was the Maine State Champion in both the mile and two mile. He also was the New England Champion in the 880-yard run in 1934 and 1935.
