University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Grant Standbrook was indispensable to the University of Maine’s success on ice during his 20 years in Orono. As goaltender coach he guided the development of four future National Hockey League netminders. Likewise he was indispensable to Maine’s success off the ice, traveling far and wide to recruit the talent that won two national championships for the Black Bears. His stellar students included NHL goalies Garth Snow and Mike Dunham from the 1993 championship team, Jimmy Howard and Ben Bishop. And, among the many prize recruits he collected during his wide-ranging travel was the first freshman to win the Hobey Baker Award and a 2017 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Paul Kariya.
