Dick DeVarney is one of the few athletes ever to perform at the University of Maine to participate in post-season playoff competition in two different sports in one year. As an outstanding shortstop on the Black Bear baseball team he was a key factor in the Bears' participation in the 1964 College World Sereis in Omaha. In the same academic year as quarterback he led the Bears to the 1965 Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida. DeVarney led the team in passing in 1963, 1964 and 1965 and led the team in punting in 1965. He was a first team All Yankee Conference selection in 1965. Following college he coached both baseball and football at the University of Maine and at Brewer High School.
