University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Gary Thorne, now the television voice of the Baltimore Orioles, was an undersized first baseman on the University of Maine freshman baseball team in 1967 with no apparent future in the sport. However, in high school, he had started working in local radio, where his intelligence, knowledge, drive and voice were soon recognized and rewarded. After earning and using two law degrees in the ‘70s, he attracted attention as the voice of UMaine hockey for almost a decade and was instrumental in the formation of Friends of Maine Hockey. Since those days his distinctive voice has been heard calling events as disparate as the World Series, NHL hockey and the Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y.
