Gene Benner competed in both track and football at the University of Maine. He held eight University, six New England and two Yankee Conference records upon graduation. In football, he was named All-New England by both the Associated Press and United Press International. In 1969, Benner was named Little All-American by the Associated Press before being drafted by the Cleveland Browns. At the time of induction, Benner held University of Maine records for receptions at 14 and yardage gained at 215 in a game. At one time he also held the record for touchdwon receptions at eight. In track, Benner competed in the hurdles and long jump. At graduation he held the record for the 60 yard high hurdle.
