University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
The 1964 University of Maine baseball team, coached by UMaine Hall of Fame member Jack Butterfield, won the Yankee Conference championship with an 8-2 record, then upset favored Northeastern, 9-5 and 4-2, at Fenway Park to advance to the College World Series. There, the upstart Black Bears became the darlings of Omaha, defeating Seton Hall, 5-1, losing to eventual champion Minnesota, 12-0, then beating Arizona State, 4-2, and Southern California, 2-1, to advance to the championship round, where they lost, 2-1, to Missouri, which subsequently lost the title game to Minnesota.
