Gerry Clapper was a 12-time letterwinner in cross country and track and field. He was a two-year cross country captain, and won the Maine State Championships in 1981 and the EIAA Eastern title in 1982. In indoor track and field, Clapper won the EIAA Eastern championship in 1983 in the two mile with a time of 8:51.71. Upon graduation, he held five University of Maine records including the mile run at 4:10.34 set in 1983, the two mile run at 8:51.71 set in 1983, the 3,000-meters at 8:23.91 set in 1984, the 5,000-meters at 14:34.37 and the four mile relay at 17:41.3. Currently, he ranks second all-time in the 5,000-meters, fourth in the 3,000-meters and fifth in the mile. In outdoor track and field, he won the Maine State Championship and the EIAA Eastern championship in the 5,000-meters in 1983. He holds the 10,000-meter record with a time of 29:59.64 and is currently fifth all-time in the 5,000-meters with a mark of 14:45.08. He also hold the distance medley (440-880-1320-mile) relay record at 11:18.7, set in 1980.Â
