University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Walt Abbott was a three-year letter winner for the University of Maine football team from 1955 through 1957. Since graduating, he has served as faculty member, football coach and interim athletic director at the University. He was head football coach from 1967 through 1975, winning the Yankee Conference Championship in 1974. Abbott served as interim director of athletics in both 1991 and 1994-95. He also served the University community as color commentator for the Black Bear football television network. In 1984 the Walt Abbott Outstanding Defensive Player Award was established in the football program in his honor. In 50 years at the University of Maine his guidance has impacted thousands of Maine students and student-athletes. He currently serves the University as a faculty member.
