Jack Butterfield was an All-Yankee Conference halfback and a fearless player. He led the team in kickoff returns in 1951 and 1952 and in punt returns in 1951. He was among the leaders in pass interceptions, scoring and rushing yardage in the early 1950's as well. He returned to Maine as an assistant football coach in 1955 and became the head baseball coach in 1957. He continued to coach football until 1969 and coached baseball until 1974. In football, the Jack Butterfield Outstanding Offensive Player Award was named after him in 1984. As a baseball coach he compiled a 240-169-2 overall record. Butterfield's 1964 team shocked the nation by finishing as the third place team in the College World Series. He later served as Vice President of scouting and player development for the New York Yankees.
