Wayne Champeon was the first Maine athlete to earn All-Yankee Conference honors in both football and basketball. The Greenville native helped lead the team to its most successful season in school history (19-4) in 1959-60. Champeon was captain of the 1960 football squad, led the team in scoring in 1958 and 1960, led in rushing yardage in 1960 and was second in 1958 and led in pass receiving, kickoff return and punt return in 1960. He was All Maine State Conference in 1960 and All Yankee Conference in 1958 and 1960. In 1961, Champeon was named University of Miane Athlete of the Year for his athletic and scholary achievements, as well as his community involvement.
