"Wally" was a member of the University of Maine athletics department staff from 1922 until his retirement in 1959. During that period he was the head of the Men's Department of Physical Education, a coach and an athletic trainer. He was voted into the Helms Hall of Fame for noeworthy achievement as an athletic trainer and the Olympic size swimming pool at Memorial Gym is named after him. Wally was a graduate of the New Haven School of Gymnastics and served as a motorcycle dispatcher in World War I.
