University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Bill Swift played for the Black Bear baseball team from 1981-1984 and was a three-time All-America selection. At the time of induction, the right hander held or shared seven University of Maine pitching records. A South Portland native, he helped lead the Black Bears to the College World Series in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984. Swift was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round in 1984 and became one of their top relievers. In 1990 he recorded a team-low ERA of 2.39. In 1991 he compiled 17 saves and an ERA of 1.99. In 1993 he finished second in the voting for the Cy Young Award in the National League.
