Janet Anderson served as head coach of the softball team for 21 years, from its inception in 1979 until 1999. She posted close to 400 wins and won two ECAC titles in 1985 and 1987, and a North Atlantic Conference Championship in 1994. In 1994 Maine earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, the first such appearance by a Maine women's team. Anderson earned NAC Coach of the Year honors in 1993 and America East Coach of the Year honors in 1998. She was a member of the National Softball Coaches Association, the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association, past president of the Maine Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and has been inducted into the Converse New Agenda Northeast Women's Hall of Fame. Anderson served as head volleyball coach at Maine for nine years as well. In 2000 she received the Block M Award from the University of Maine Alumni Association. She received the 2003 Exemplary Lifetime Commitment and 2004 Pathfinder Awards from the National Association for Girls and Women in sport.
