Don Smith was one of the greatest cross country runners in New England in the late 1930's. He captained the 1938 and 1939 cross country teams that won the New England Championships, and was the New England Cross Country Champion in 1937, 1938 and 1939. In addition, Smith was the New England 880 yard champion for two years and the mile champion for three years. Smith was also a three-time Maine State Champion from 1938 to 1940 in both the 880 and the mile. He earned nine varsity letters while participating in cross country and track from 1937 to 1940.
