University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Ron Lanza played leading roles for two of the most memorable teams in University of Maine history: the 1964 baseball team that finished third in the College World Series and the 1965 Tangerine Bowl football team. He is one of only two Black Bears to play for both teams. On the diamond, the strong-armed right fielder led the ’64 Black Bears in home runs, RBIs and stolen bases, and was named All-Yankee Conference and All-New England. On the gridiron, the rugged cornerback was a recipient of the coveted Hal Westerman Award for outstanding play in the spirit of Maine football. Post-graduation, he was a decorated Marine first lieutenant in Vietnam.
