Mike McHugh was a four-year letter winner in hockey from 1984 to 1988. He was an All-American choice in 1988 when he became, at the time of his induction, the first of only three Maine players to be named New England Player of the Year and the first of four Black Bears to be selected as Hockey East Player of the Year. He was an All-Hockey East choice in 1988 and was also New England's top defensive forward in 1987 and 1988. McHugh was captain as a junior and senior, when Maine advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, and also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, and also advanced to its first Frozen Four. His 152 career points ranks 12th all-time at Maine and was third when he closed his Black Bear career. McHugh appeared in the NHL with Minnesota and San Jose before ending his pro career in 1997-98 with the Hershey Bears.
