Claude Pettaway was the starting strong safety for the football team from 1987 through 1990. In 1987 he was named Maine Rookie of the Year and was also named to the All-New England Freshman team. As a junior, Pettaway was named the Walter Abbott Most Outstanding Defensive Back, First Team All-ECAC and First Team All-Yankee Conference. Pettaway had an outstanding senior season in which he led the nation with a school record 11 interceptions. At the time of induction, he held a Maine record for the longest run with a blocked PAT of 90 yards. In addition to several Maine honors as a senior, Pettaway was named First Team Kodak All-American, First Team All-New England Football Writer's Association, First Team All-ECAC, Football Coach Association First Team All-American, Associated Press First Team All-American and Sporting News First Team All-American.
