Broomhall is a 1950 graduate of the University of Maine. He was captain of the ski team for three years and Maine Intercollegiate Athletic Association Skimeister in 1947. His greatest accomplishment as a member of the team was placing 12th in the Nordic combined of the 1947 U.S. Olympic Trials for the 1948 Olympic games. Broomhall also placed 19th in the Nordic combined Olympic trials in 1951. The Black Bears were Maine State Champions in each of his three years as captain. In 1964, Broomhall received the prestigious Russell Wilder Memorial Trophy presented annually to the individual furthering the spirit of skiing in the hearts and minds of the youth of America.
