University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame
Chuck Martin was a record-setting swimmer in an era of the University of Maine’s greatest success in the pool and 35 years later his 4:36.10 timing in the 500-meter freestyle still stands as a school record. That’s how dominating he was. At a time when Maine was competing successfully with the Ivy League schools and other swimming powers, Martin also set long-standing school records in the 200 and 1,650 freestyles. A powerful swimmer with an excellent sense of pace, he also made outstanding contributions to record-setting 400 and 800 freestyle relays. This despite class and civil engineering labs’ coming first. Since graduating from UMaine, Martin has been involved worldwide with major construction projects.
