William Calkin was a four-year letter winner in track and field from 1951-1955. He served as captain of the 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 indoor teams and captain of the 1954 outdoor team. In 1954, Calkin won the 120- yard high hurdles with a time of 15.5 and the 220-yard low hurdles with a time of 25.7 at the Maine Intercollegiate Athletic Association outdoor meet. He also won both events the following year at the same meet. Calkin won the Alan Hillman Memorial Trophy in 1954, honoring an outstanding athlete in track events at the annual MIAA Meet. Calkin won the 220-yard low hurdles at the Yankee Conference meet in 1953 and 1954, along with the 120-yard high hurdles in 1955. He held numerous school records upon graduation. Calkin was a Senior Skull and a Sophomore Owl.
