Curt Smith served as captain of the 2008 baseball team. He led the Black Bears to a pair of America East Championships and NCAA Regional appearances in 2005 and 2006, being named to the NCAA All-Regional Team in each of those years. He was named the America East Player of the Year and earned a spot on the America East First Team in 2008 after hitting .403 with 60 runs scored, 17 doubles and 11 home runs. He finished his career with 300 hits, second on Maine’s all-time list. He set the school record for triples with 19 and currently ranks second on that list. He is tied for third on Maine’s all-time RBI list with 178, fourth on Maine’s doubles list with 60 and tied for fourth on Maine’s single season hits list with 87 in 2006. He led the team in batting or finished second each of his four years with the Black Bears. Following his senior season, he was selected in the MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.Â
