Rip Black earned seven varsity letters while playing football and participating in indoor and outdoor track. His outdoor track teams captured the New England Championships three years in a row. Black captained the team his senior year. He was the Maine State Champion and New England Champion in the hammer throw in 1928 and 1929, and the Maine State Champion in the javelin in 1928. He won the IC4A track meet hammer event in 1929. Black also won a bronze medal in the 1928 Olympic Games.
