Charles Akers had the distinction of competing on two U.S. Olympic teams. He competed in 1960 in Cross Country Skiing and in 1964 in the Biathlon. In 1961 he was named to the All-American Ski Team and was the NCAA Cross Country Ski Champion. He was the captain of the Black Bears in 1960 and 1961. In 2006 Akers was inducted into the Maine Ski Hall of Fame.
