Kirsti Hussey enters her fifth season with the University of Maine women’s ice hockey program after joining the Black Bears in 2022.
During her tenure at Maine, Hussey has helped build one of the nation’s emerging programs through recruiting, player development, and team culture. She has developed two unanimous Hockey East All-Rookie Team selections, guided the conference’s youngest defensive corps to the fourth-lowest goals-against average in Hockey East in 2025-26, and helped student-athletes reach the international stage, including an Olympian and a player invited to her National Team selection camp.
With 20 years of coaching experience, Hussey has established a reputation for developing competitive programs and maximizing the potential of student-athletes. Prior to Maine, she spent three seasons at Brown University, helping the Bears achieve their most successful season in five years. Before Brown, Hussey was part of the coaching staff at the University of Connecticut, where she helped lead the Huskies to a Hockey East Championship Game appearance and a then program-best national ranking of No. 7.
Hussey’s coaching experience also includes head coaching roles at Northfield Mount Hermon School and St. Mark’s School, where she guided St. Mark’s to its highest NEPSAC Division I finish in 15 years. She started her coaching career at Hamilton College, where she helped develop a First Team All-NESCAC defenseman.
Beyond her coaching career, Hussey has been involved as a staff member with the USA Hockey’s Girls’ National Development Camps from 2009-2025 and has participated in the NHL Coaches’ Association Female Coaches Program and the Boston Bruins Scouting Mentorship Program.
A former professional player, Hussey competed for two years in Canada’s National Women’s Hockey League after completing her collegiate career at Bowdoin College and Dartmouth College. She earned First Team Division III All-America honors, helped Dartmouth capture the Ivy League Championship in 2004, and played in four consecutive NCAA Frozen Fours. Hussey was also selected twice to attend the U.S. Women’s National Team selection camps, as one of the top 12 defensemen in the country.
