Legends Weekend: 1983 College World Series Team

Maine's seven College World Series appearances to be celebrated on May 16

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball program will proudly celebrate its rich tradition and championship legacy by honoring all seven of its College World Series teams as part of 'Legends Weekend'. Members of each team will be welcomed back to Orono and introduced on field as part of a pregame ceremony on Saturday, May 16 when the Black Bears host UAlbany at 1 p.m.

The teams will be recognized and celebrated for their lasting impact on the Maine baseball program and the University community, bringing together generations of Black Bears to reflect on unforgettable moments.

1983: The 1983 Black Bears defeated New York Tech and Harvard (twice) to earn the NCAA Northeast Regional crowd, advancing to the College World Series for the third consecutive year where they would fall to Michigan (6-5) and Arizona State (7-0). Jeff Paul paced Maine at the plate with a .372 clip followed by Brad Colton (.339), Rick Lashua (.326), Kevi Bernier (.323), and Bill Reynolds (.319). Bill Swift finished 9-3 on the mound with a 2.81 ERA while Stu Lacognata added a 6-2 record. Maine, which also captured the ECAC championship, finished the season at 29-16 overall.
