Baseball Falls at Merrimack in Seven Innings on Wednesday Afternoon

North Andover, MA - The University of Maine baseball team was defeated in seven innings by Merrimack on Wednesday afternoon.

First Pitch: 3 P.M. (19-8 Merrimack)

First Inning: Merrimack jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run. They plated two more runs in the frame on a double play and a wild pitch.

Second Inning: Tyler Nielsen began the second inning on the mound for Maine. Marshall Smaracko allowed 4 runs on 2 hits, 1 walk and 4 hit batters in his inning of work.

Merrimack added seven runs on a grand slam and a three-run home run in the second frame.

Third Inning: Maine got the board in the third inning in a big way as they scored six runs in the frame.

Jeremiah Jenkins got the scoring started as he hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Jonathan Gonzalez (BB). Jake Marquez followed him up with a sac-fly to left field, scoring Tyler Annis (2B).

Jack Friend capped off the inning by recording his first collegiate home run as he hit a grand slam to left center, scoring Will Burns (BB), Jenkins (1B) and Zach Martin (BB) on the play.

Blaine Cockburn began the third inning on the mound for Maine. Nielsen allowed 7 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks and 1 hit batter in his inning of work.

Merrimack plated three on a three-run home run in the bottom of third, leading 14-6 after three innings.

Fourth Inning: Jenkins brought home Maine's seventh run of the day as he hit a sac-fly to right field, scoring Annis (BB).

Merrimack plated five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Fifth Inning: Jonathan Gonzalez picked up an RBI for the Black Bears as he singled to center field, scoring Logan Burrill (BB) on the play.

Gabe Gifford began the fifth inning on the mound for Maine. Cockburn allowed 8 runs on 6 hits, 5 walks, 1 hit batter and 1 strikeout in his 2 innings of work.

Sixth Inning: Ryan Scott began the sixth inning on the mound for Maine. Gifford allowed 1 walk, 1 hit batter and struck out 1 in his shutout inning of work.

Scott fired off a perfect inning in the sixth, allowing no base runners and striking out 1.

Maine (8-23, 4-7 AE) returns to Orono for a weekend series against Rider from Apr. 19-21.
