Baseball Advances to the America East Championship Game

Vestel, N.Y. – The University of Maine baseball program kept their America East Championship bid alive as they split their action on Friday to advance to the final day of the America East Tournament as they lost to #1 Binghamton before defeating #2 UMBC.

Game One - First Pitch – 1:05 PM – 6-5 Binghamton

Scoring Plays:
Albert De La Rosa got the Black Bears on the board in the fourth inning as he hit his second solo home run of the playoffs and fifth of the season, deep to left field.

The Black Bears broke through in a big way in the seventh inning as they plated three runs on three-straight RBI singles, starting off with Troy Carpenter on a single to center field, scoring Juju Stevens (1B).

Shane Andrus followed suit as he hit a single through the left side on the field, scoring Hunter St. Denis (1B) before Quinn Murphy capped off the scoring with a single to center field, scoring Carpenter (1B).

St. Denis hit a solo home run in the top of ninth inning to give the Black Bears the lead in the final inning, his 11th home run of the season.

Pitching Breakdown:
Thomas Stabley went five innings in the start, allowing just two runs on five hits, two walks and striking out two batters.

Owen Wheeler went an inning and a 1/3 in relief, allowing one run on one hit, one walk and one strikeout.

Sebastian Holt (1-3) took the loss in the contest as he allowed three runs on two hits, five walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Game Two – First Pitch – 5:05 PM - 11-6 Black Bears

Scoring Plays:
Maine opened up the contest with seven runs in the first inning, starting off with a Carpenter RBI double to center field, scoring Juju Stevens (BB).

Maine added on another two runs as Andrus singled home a pair of runs in the form of St. Denis (BB) and Carpenter (2B).

De La Rosa brought home a pair of runs on a double to left field as Andrus (1B) and Murphy (1B) scored on the play.

Brody Rasmussen hit an RBI double to center field to score De La Rosa (2B) before a Nic Pepe RBI single capped off the scoring outburst in the first frame.

Rasmussen added another run to the Black Bears total in the third inning on a sac fly to right field, scoring Quinn Murphy (2B).

Andrus drove in his third and fourth runs of the game in the fourth inning as he hit a two-run double to left field, scoring Pepe (1B) and St. Denis (1B/SB).

Carpenter capped off the scoring on the evening as he hit his second home run of the playoffs and 16th of the season, a solo shot to deep left field.

Pitching Breakdown:
Gianni Gambardella went just an inning and a third as the opener, allowing five runs on five hits.

Pierce Friedman (4-1) picked up the win as he turned in the best relief outing of his collegiate career, throwing 93 pitches across six and 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Tommy Martin pitched the final inning for Maine, allowing no base runners in his inning of work.

Next Time Out:
The Black Bears (24-31) will take on the Binghamton Bearcats for the America East Championship on Saturday, May 23. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM but is subject to change due to inclement weather projected for Saturday.
