Cam Brown Registers 2 Assists

Box Score The Maine Black Bears Men's Hockey Team headed to Bridgeport, Connecticut for game 1 of their series against the University of Connecticut Huskies.

The 1st period saw the Black Bears open the scoring just under 8 minutes into the period. Rob Michel made a beautiful deflection off a Cam Brown pass that was able to beat UConn goaltender Adam Huska, giving the boys from Maine a 1-0 lead. Brendan Robbins added a secondary assist on the play. The lead however would be short-lived as Spencer Naas from UConn was able to beat Maine goaltender Matt Morris on a backdoor play, on assists from Benjamin Freeman and Kasperi Ojantakanen. UConn would then add a goal just under 4 minutes later as they capitalized on the powerplay. Max Kaiter was able to find a seam on assists from Maxim Letunov and Philip Nyberg giving UConn a 2-1 lead heading into first intermission.

The 2nd period saw the Black Bears battle back as Blaine Byron made a hustle play on the forecheck finding Cam Brown, who eventually connected with a streaking Brendan Robbins who was able to tuck it away, pulling Maine even at 2. UConn would regain the lead 7 minutes later as forward Tage Thompson was able to find empty ice, making no mistake and firing a shot that found twine. Max Kaiter and David Drake were credited with the primary and secondary assists, respectively. The Black Bears never said die, and quickly retied the game, as Nolan Vesey took a faceoff win from Patrick Shea and found the back of the net, knotting the score at 3. However, with just under 20 seconds to go in the period, Wyatt Newpower would find the back of the net on the powerplay, giving UConn a 4-3 lead heading into the 3rd period.

The 3rd period for Maine proved tough, unable to solve Adam Huska. Kasperi Ojantakanen was able to find the back of the net for UConn on assists from Brian Morgan and Wyatt Newpower. UConn would later add an empty netter, sealing the game for the Huskies at 6-3. Maine goaltender Matt Morris delivered a 32 save performance for the Black Bears.

The Black Bears return to action this Saturday, as they have a rematch with the Huskies at historic Fenway Park. Puck drop is set for 1:30 pm and will be televised on NESNplus.
