Maine's seven College World Series appearances to be celebrated on May 16

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball program will proudly celebrate its rich tradition and championship legacy by honoring all seven of its College World Series teams as part of 'Legends Weekend'. Members of each team will be welcomed back to Orono and introduced on field as part of a pregame ceremony on Saturday, May 16 when the Black Bears host UAlbany at 3 p.m.

The teams will be recognized and celebrated for their lasting impact on the Maine baseball program and the University community, bringing together generations of Black Bears to reflect on unforgettable moments.

Details of each team will be provided throughout the week, beginning with the 1964 Black Bears.

1964: The 1964 University of Maine baseball team, coached by UMaine Hall of Fame member Jack Butterfield and led by a group of sophomores, won the Yankee Conference championship with an 8-2 record, then upset favored Northeastern, 9-5 and 4-2, at Fenway Park to advance to the College World Series. There, the upstart Black Bears became the darlings of Omaha, defeating Seton Hall, 5-1, losing to eventual champion Minnesota, 12-0, then beating Arizona State, 4-2, and Southern California, 2-1, to advance to the championship round, where they lost, 2-1, to Missouri, which subsequently lost the title game to Minnesota. Butterfield was awarded the NCAA Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association while Joe Ferris, undefeated in three CWS games, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series while captain David Thompso hit safely in every game to earn a spot on the all-CWS team. Ferris finished the season with a 9-0 mark while Thompson and Dick DeVarney each hit .333 and Carl Merrill, who later became the manager of the New York Yankees, batted .327. The trip marked Maine's first to the College World Series.
