Preview: Maine, UNH renew rivalry at Alfond Arena

Maine will host UNH in the Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle this weekend

ORONO, Maine – The #11/12 University of Maine men's ice hockey team will host rival New Hampshire this weekend for the Buffalo Wild Wings Border at Alfond Arena.

Puck drop between the Black Bears and the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. on both Friday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6. Friday's tilt will air live on NESN, with both Hockey East games also streaming on ESPN+ and an international stream available via Hockey East/Stretch Internet. The games can also be listened to via 92.9 FM or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio.

Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to both games.

WHAT'S ON TAP

• The University of Maine men's ice hockey team will host rival New Hampshire in the Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle on Friday and Saturday at Alfond Arena.
• Maine was off last week, having last played on Nov. 21 and 22 at Boston College ... the Black Bears lost 7-3 on Friday night before rebounding for a 3-0 win on Saturday.

• Move the Black Bears to 9-5-1 on the year and 6-3-0 in Hockey East play.
• Bump Maine to 75-64-13 in the all-time series with UNH.
• Give Maine a five-game unbeaten streak against New Hampshire.

SERIES HISTORY vs NEW HAMPSHIRE
• Maine holds an overall record of 74-64-14 in the all-time series with UNH ... the Black Bears went 2-0-1 overall against the Wildcats last season, going 1-0-1 in Orono and 1-0-0 in Durham.
• Nine current Black Bears have at least one point against UNH ... Josh Nadeau (6-5-11) is Maine's active scoring leaders followed by Frank Djurasevic (2-3-5) and Owen Fowler (3-1-4).
• The Wildcats and Black Bears first played on Dec. 15, 1979 at Alfond Arena, with John Tortorella scoring the game-winning goal in Maine's 5-3 victory.
• Maine has had two different nine-game winning streaks in the heated series.
• Current Maine assistant coach Alfie Michaud had seven career wins against UNH, including the April 3, 1999 National Championship, 3-2, overtime win.

ABOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE
• New Hampshire enters Friday night at 7-7-0 overall and 3-4-0 in Hockey East play.
• The Wildcats played a single game this past weekend, picking up a 3-0 road win over Bentley on Saturday night.
• UNH has eight players with at least five points each and three players with nine points each … Morgan Winters (6-3-9) leads the team with six goals … Brendan Fitzgerald (0-8-8) has a team-high eight assists.
• Goaltender Kyle Chauvette has started 13 games, going 6-7-0 with a .899 save percentage and 2.68 goals against average while posting two shutouts.
• UNH has two ranked road wins this season, earning a 4-3 win over a #2 Michigan State squad and a 4-3 win over a #10 UConn squad.

IT'S WORTH NOTING
• Maine has five first-year skaters with more than five points each, the most in Hockey East.
• Josh Nadeau's 85 points in his first 86 career games trails only Gustav Nyquist's 107 points among Maine players in their first 86 career games since the 2002-03 season.
• Earlier this season, Justin Poirier became one of just three Hockey East rookies since 2005-06 to score nine goals in their first 10 career games.
• Since Maine was ranked in both national polls on Oct. 30, 2023, the Black Bears have been ranked in 59 consecutive polls for the longest stretch for the program since an 84-week stretch from Dec. 3, 2001 to Jan. 3, 2005.
• Maine has outshot the opponent in 69 of 89 contests dating back to the start of the 2023-24 season ... on Nov. 6 at UMass, the Black Bears fired 54 shots on goal, marking the sixth time since the 2003-04 season that Maine had at least 54 shots on goal in a game.
• Maine's weekend sweep of BU Oct. 31-Nov. 1 was the program's first weekend sweep of a top-5 team since doing it at #3 Boston College on Jan. 25-26, 2013.
