Box Score Baltimore, MD – The University of Maine baseball team picked up their first conference win of the season as they defeated UMBC on Friday afternoon, 2-1.
 
Eighth Inning: Caleb Leys took over on the mound to begin the eighth inning for the Black Bears. Colin Fitzgerald turned in his best performance on the 2023 season to this point in the season, allowing no runs across 7 complete frames on 1 hit, 2 walks and striking out 7.
 
Ninth Inning: Sam Daniels began the ninth inning on the mound for UMBC, spelling the end of the day for Luke Johnson. Johnson was strong in his start, allowing no runs across 8 innings of work on 3 hits, no walks and striking out 12.
 
Quinn McDaniel broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the final frame as he hit a two-run home run to left field, scoring Jake Rainess (HBP). The home run was McDaniel's fourth of the season.
 
Leewood Molessa got half the runs back for his squad as he hit a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Caleb Leys (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he allowed no runs on 1 hit in the eighth inning.
 
Sam Daniels (0-1) took the loss for UMBC as he allowed two runs on 1 hit, 2 walks and 1 hit batter in the ninth inning.
 
Justin Baeyens (2) picked up the save for the Black Bears as he pitched the ninth inning, allowing 1 run on 1 hit in the final frame of the contest.
 
Maine (5-10. 1-0 AE) will face off against the Retrievers on Saturday, Mar. 18 in game two of the weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 P.M.
