ORONO, Maine - The Black Bears took the final game of their three game series with Albany last weekend to clinch the #5 seed in the America East Tournament, facing the Great Danes who clinched the #4 seed taking the first two games against Maine last weekend. First pitch between the Great Danes and the Black Bears will be at 11am on Wednesday morning, kicking off the tournament.
Last Time Out
The Black Bears, after dropping a double header in one-run contests to Albany, took the final game of the series on senior day in a close 2-1 victory. Maine pitching only allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out 10. RBIs came from Brandon Vicens and Hernen Sardinas in the fourth inning, with Eddie Emerson coming in with a one-run lead and the bases loaded in the fifth and struck out the batter for the third out, earning himself a win and setting up Freshman Matthew Pushard for his first career save.
Maine This Season
The Black Bears are led by Junior Catcher Chris Bec, who has a team-high .360 batting average and 64 hits. He now leads the conference in batting average, and has a conference-high 17 doubles on the year. Sophomore shortstop Jeremy Pena has been swinging the bat well as of late, he's second on the team in RBIs with 34, and batting average with .303. Senior right-fielder Tyler Schwanz has hit a team-high six home runs this season, he is batting .272 on the season. He now holds the team-high for RBI's with 34. Pena is third in the conference with four triples on the season.
