Box Score ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine men's ice hockey team fell to the University of New Hampshire on Saturday evening by the score of 4-3 on Saturday evening at the Alfond Arena. Maine falls to 5-9-3 overall and 1-6-1 in Hockey East play while New Hampshire goes to 8-6-2 and 5-1-1 in league play.
Rob Michel got the Black Bears on the board with 6:38 left in the first period on the power play as
Nolan Vesey skated into the Wildcats' zone along the right boards and passed it to Michel. Michel hit a rising shot from the point that got by UNH goalie Danny Tirone who was screened.
The Wildcats knotted the game with 1:38 left in the first on a power play goal by Tyler Kelleher and took the lead with less than a minute left with a Liam Blackburn goal, also on the power play.
The score stayed that way until Blackburn notched his second power play tally of the game with 3:31 remaining in the second to put UNH up 3-1.
The Black Bears continued to pepper Tirone, outshooting UNH 21-13 in the second period, but couldn't get any closer until
Cam Brown put back a rebound off a
Brendan Robbins shot 3:38 into the third stanza.
The score remained that way until 2:53 left, when Kelleher notched his second goal of the night to give UNH a 4-2 lead, but
Chase Pearson responded for Maine with 25 seconds left as he received a pass from
Mitchell Fossier who was behind the net and beat the goalie five-hole.
Maine had a couple of more chances but could not find the equalizer.
Maine outshot New Hampshire 41-29 with Maine goalie
Rob McGovern making 25 saves and Tirone notching 38. Maine was 1-for-4 on the power play while New Hampshire was 3-for-8.
