Preview: Soccer closes out non-conference play at UConn

The Black Bears will play the Huskies in Storrs on Sunday.

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women's soccer team will close out non-conference play this weekend with a road match against the UConn Huskies on Sunday, Sept. 14.
 
The Black Bears and Huskies are set to kickoff at 1 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The game will stream live on UConn+.

ABOUT MAINE
• The Black Bears are 1-3-1 on the year after falling to Holy Cross, 1-0, at home this past Sunday … Maine out-shot Holy Cross, 16-13, in the contest and is out-shooting opponents 69-57 on the year with a 35-29 edge in shots on target.
• In road games this season, Maine is 1-0-1… the Black Bears earned a 3-2 win at Merrimack before battling to a 2-2 tie at Army.
• Emma Nicholson scored her second goal of the season in the game at Army and now has two on the year… Victoria Dungey earned an assist in the Army game and has a team-leading.
• Forward Jordane Pinette, goalkeeper Grace Wilson and defender Rebecca Grisdale were all named to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team … in the preseason poll, the Black Bears earned four first place votes and were picked to finish third.
 
ABOUT UCONN
• The Huskies enter Sunday's match at 3-2-1 overall after defeating Rhode Island, 2-0, on Thursday night.
• Four different student-athletes have scored a goal for the Huskies … Chioma Okafor, who was a Third Team All-American and MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist in 2024, has a team-leading two goals while three other Huskies have scored one each ... Okafor, a forward, was named the 2025 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
• Ava Yamas has started all five games for UConn, going 2-2-1 with two shutouts and one combined shutout.
• UConn went 12-5-4 overall and 4-3-3 in Big East play last year ... the Huskies won the conference tournament to earn an NCAA bid.
• The Huskies were picked to finish third in this year's Preseason Women's Soccer Coaches' Poll


 SERIES HISTORY vs UCONN
• Maine is 0-2-1 in the all-time series with UConn.
• The last meeting in the series came in 2013, with UConn picking up a 1-0 win in Storrs.
• The first-ever meeting in the series came in 2006, with the Black Bears and Huskies playing to a 1-1 double overtime tie in the UConn Classic in Storrs.

• Maine will begin America East play on Sunday, Sept. 21 when it travels to UAlbany to face the Great Danes.
