Opening Night -- Both Maine and Liberty will begin the 2025 campaign on Saturday afternoon as the Black Bears are coming off of a 2024 season in which they went 5-7 and 3-5 in CAA action, both being their highest win totals since the 2021 season and the most wins under Coach Stevens in a single season.
Series History -- The Black Bears square off against the Flames for the third time in program history, with the two sides currently tied at one-game each in the win column. The first game, back in 1992, saw the Black Bears coming away with the victory, 42-20 in Orono. This was when Liberty was still competing at the FCS level and the Black Bears returned three of their five interceptions for a touchdown in the victory. The last matchup between the two sides came in the 2019 season in Lynchburg. It ended up being a shootout on the night as Liberty came away with the victory, 59-44.
Returners -- The Black Bears will be taking the field on Saturday night only having nine starters from the 2024 season finale against New Hampshire taking the field. Maine will run out four offensive starters, three defensive and both special team members, while 15 new Black Bears are set to pick up a start in the contest.
All-CAA Preseason Honors -- Trevin Ewing highlights the Black Bears on the All-CAA Preseason Honors as he named to the team as a kick returner. In 2025, Ewing returned 27 kickoffs, totaling 742 yards and one touchdown, a 98-yard score against Monmouth on Sept. 14.
Four other Black Bears were named honorable mentions, those being: QB - Carter Peevy, LB - Christian Thomas, FS - Devin Vaught and CB - Jamaree Gibson.
Liberty Overview -- The Flames begin the season following a 8-4 season and a 5-3   record in CUSA. They boasted the number four rushing attack in all of the NCAA a   season ago, averaging nearly 251 yards per game on the ground and just north of 3000 total yards on the ground for the 2024 season.
A Maine Win Would:
...The fifth win since the 2000 season over an FBS opponent.
... The second-straight win on opening weekend after defeating Colgate 17-14 in Orono last August.
... The second win in program history over Liberty, having defeated the Flames back in 1992, 42-20.
... The second opening weekend win of the Coach Stevens Era.
