Preview: Black Bears host River Hawks in Hockey East Tournament quarterfinal

Maine will host UMass Lowell at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.

ORONO, Maine – The #4/5 University of Maine men's hockey team is set to host #19 UMass Lowell in a Hockey East Tournament quarterfinal round game on Saturday, March 15 at Alfond Arena.

The single-elimination game between the second-seeded Black Bears and the seventh-seeded River Hawks is scheduled for a 6 p.m. puck drop. 

The contest will air on ESPN+ with an international stream available via Hockey East/Stretch Internet. It can also be listened to via 92.9 FM in eastern Maine, 100.5 FM in southern Maine or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio.

WHAT'S ON TAP
• The second-seeded University of Maine men's ice hockey team will host seventh-seeded UMass Lowell in a Hockey East Tournament quarterfinal game on Saturday night at Alfond Arena.
• This will be the 18th meeting between Maine and UMass Lowell in the Hockey East Tournament and the 13th-ever quarterfinal round matchup.
• The teams met twice during the 20242-5 regular season with Maine sweeping a two-game series at Lowell in January with 2-1 and 3-1 wins.
• The 2025 Hockey East Tournament is a single-elimination format tournament.
 
A WIN ON SATURDAY WOULD. . .
• Move Maine to 22-7-6 on the year.
• Advance the Black Bears to back-to-back Hockey East Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2005 and 2006.
• Move Maine to 58-48 all-time in the conference tournament, including a mark of 15-3 against UMass Lowell.
• Bump the Black Bears to 87-49-6 in the all-time series with the River Hawks.
• Give Maine 15 wins in a season at Alfond Arena for the first time since going 16-4-1 in 2005-06.
 
SERIES HISTORY vs UMASS LOWELL
• Maine holds an all-time record of 86-49-6 against UMass Lowell ... the Black Bears are 44-24-1 against the River Hawks at Alfond Arena.
• The Black Bears have faced the River Hawks 17 times in the Hockey East Tournament, going 14-3 overall, including a 9-3 mark in the quarterfinal round and 9-1 record in home games.
• The teams met twice during the regular season with Maine sweeping a two-game series at Lowell in January with 2-1 and 3-1 wins.
• Fifteen total Black Bears have at least one career point against the River Hawks ... Harrison Scott (6-1-7) and Brandon Holt (2-5-7) are Maine's active scoring leaders against UMass Lowell ... Lynden Breen (2-4-6) has chipped in six points each while Thomas Freel has five helpers and David Breazeale (4-0-4) and Taylor Makar (2-1-3) all have multiple goals against the River Hawks.
• The first-ever meeting in the series came on Jan. 14, 1978, with Maine dropping that road tilt, 5-1.
 
ABOUT UMASS LOWELL
• The River Hawks have advanced to the quarterfinal round after earning a 3-2 overtime win over New Hampshire on Wednesday night.
• UMass went 15-15-4 overall and 8-13-3 in Hockey East play during the regular season, finishing seventh in the conference standings.
• The River Hawks are 6-6-1 on the road this season, including a 2-1-2 mark at ranked opponents.
• Owen Cole leads the team with 20 points on eight goals and 12 assists … Scout Truman, who scored the overtime winner against UNH, has a team-leading 10 goals.
• The River Hawks are scoring an average of 2.6 goals per game while giving up 2.7 goals per game.
• UML is converting on 20.6 percent of power plays while killing 79.4 percent of penalties – sitting sixth in Hockey East in both categories.
 
MAINE IN THE HOCKEY EAST TOURNAMENT
• Maine is playing in its 38th Hockey East Tournament this season ... that ties with New Hampshire for the third-most appearances in league history behind Boston College (40) and Boston University (40).
• The Black Bears have won five titles, third most all-time behind BC (12) and BU (10).
• Maine is 57-48 all-time in the Hockey East Tournament ... the Black Bears hold a record of 32-24 in the quarterfinal round, including a record of 31-4 at home in quarterfinal games.
• This is the eighth time that Maine is the No. 2 Seed in the conference tournament, holding a 17-5 all-time record while seeded second ... the Black Bears have advanced to the title game four times when the No. 2 seed.
• Maine appeared in its first title game in 1987 and went on to appear in seven consecutive championship games.
 
SEARCHING FOR THE SIXTH
• Maine is in search of its sixth Hockey East Tournament title.
• Maine won its first championship in 1989 when it defeated Boston College, 5-4, in a title game held at Boston College.
• Maine's last tournament title came in 2004 when it defeated UMass, 2-1, in three overtimes.
• The Black Bears have not advanced to the semifinal round in back-to-back seasons since 2005 and 2006.
• Maine's five titles are third most all-time behind BC (12) and BU (10).
