Preview: Black Bears hit the road for Thursday tilt at NJIT

Black Bears carry five-game win streak into Thursday's match-up

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (12-10, 7-2) begins three-straight on the road with a trip to NJIT (7-14, 4-5) where it will look to extend its win streak to six-straight overall, and four in a row over the Highlanders, on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.

 NOTES FROM CONFERENCE PLAY:
-In league play, the Black Bears currently lead the field in scoring at 63.4 points per game with a league-high 45.9 percent mark from the floor.
-The Black Bears are averaging just 12.3 turnovers per game, second best among conference leaders.
-Caroline Bornemann (4th-13.8) and Caroline Dotsey (7th-11.8) each rank among the top-10 in conference only scoring, each with double-digit scoring totals in five conference games.
-Bornemann leads the league in conference only rebounding (9.0) while Paula Gallego is atop the league in assists in conference play (4.2).
-Maine has held four conference opponents under 40 points.
-Olivia Rockwood has posted a league-best 48.6% mark from three point range with 2.0 triples per outing against conference foes.

LAST TIME OUT:
ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (12-10, 7-2) extended its win streak to five in a row, while snapping Vermont's (12-11, 7-2) seven game win streak, with a 45-39 decision at Skip Chappelle Court on Saturday afternoon. The win was also Maine's fourth-straight against the Catamounts.

The Black Bears have now won 19 consecutive games at home against America East competition.

Maine, which limited the Catamounts to just three points in the fourth quarter, held Vermont to just 16-of-44 (36.4) from the floor including 2-of-10 from three-point range.

The Black Bears, known for their outside game, made the offensive adjustments needed as they outscored the Catamounts 28-16 in the paint. Sarah Talon led Maine with 11 points off the bench while Asta Blauenfeldt added 11 of her own. Caroline Bornemann, who drew a big charge with under a minute remaining in regulation, added six points and 12 rebounds while Caroline Dotsey posted nine points off the pine. Paula Gallego chipped in seven points and nine boards.

Maine, which finished 2-of-10 from three-point range, hit 17-of-49 (34.7) overall in a game which featured seven lead changes and five ties.

A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
Maine currently holds the conference's longest active win streak at five with a most recent victory over Vermont to move the Black Bears into second in the America East standings. Over the stretch, the Black Bears are limiting opponents to just 48.4 points per game. Maine is averaging 63.2 points per game during the stretch, outscoring opponents by a 14.8 margin. Individually, Caroline Dotsey is averaging 17.6 points per game, including a career-high 30 point outing at New Hampshire, with double-figures in four of her last five. Caroline Bornemann, who leads Maine in overall scoring (12.1) and rebounding (8.0), is averaging 14.4 points and 9.0 rebounds during the win streak while Paula Gallego has been equally impressive during the stretch with 9.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. Bornemann ranks second in the league in rebounding (8.0) and sixth in scoring (12.1). Gallego sets the table for Maine, ranking second in the America East in assists (3.9) and tops in assist to turnover ratio (1.8) with 22 assists to just 10 turnovers, including two games with zero giveaways, in her last five outings. Asta Blauenfeldt is adding 9.3 points, 3.0 assists, and a percent clip from downtown. Olivia Rockwood ranks third in the America East with 2.0 triples per game and leads Maine at 43.0 percent from three-point range. Despite a season low 10 three point attempts and just two makes in its latest win over Vermont, the Black Bears still lead the conference in both triples per game (8.2) and triples attempted per game (24.9). Maine, which ranks third with just 13.5 giveaways per game, checks in tops in the league with 15.8 assists and ranks third in scoring at 61.1 points.

A LOOK AT NJIT:
After starting the conference schedule 3-0, the Highlanders have dropped five of their last six in league play with the lone win coming at UMass Lowell. NJIT enters play with the league's second ranked offense. The game will feature the league's top-2 three-point threats with the Highlanders checking in second in triples made per game (7.5) and three-point attempts (24.2). NJIT's defense ranks last in the league as it is allowing 65.3 points per game this season. Alejandra Zuniga checks in third among league leaders in scoring at 16.6 points per game. Olivia Kulyk, who ranks second on the team in scoring at 10.3 points per game, leads the America East at 2.0 triples made per game and a 39.2 percent clip from downtown. Trinity Williams is adding 9.9 points and a team-high 6.2 rebounds.

SERIES WITH NJIT:
Maine and NJIT meet for the 13th time in history after the Highlanders joined the America East in the 2020-21 season. Maine owns the all-time series, 8-4, and has won three-straight in the series including a 71-58 decision earlier this year in Orono. In the latest meeting, Caroline Bornemann posted a monster game with a career-high 34 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to go along with 13 rebounds and six assists. The Black Bears have won six of the last seven meetings. Maine is 3-1 all-time on the road against the Highlanders. Prior to NJIT joining the league, the two teams met in 2009, a contest won by NJIT in Newark by a score of 63-50. The first-ever meeting came in 2008 where the Black Bears were defeated on their home court, 68-60.
