Preview: #4/5 Maine heads to #11/10 UConn for top-10 tilt

The #4 University of Maine men’s ice hockey team will head to Connecticut this weekend for a single game against the #11 Huskies on Friday, Feb.21.

ORONO, Maine – The #4/5 University of Maine men's ice hockey team will head to Connecticut this weekend for a single game against the #11/10 Huskies on Friday, Feb.21.

Puck drop at the Toscano Family Ice Forum is set for 7:30 p.m., with the game airing live on NESN. The contest will also stream on ESPN+, with an international stream available via Hockey East/Stretch Internet, and can also be listened to via 95.7 FM or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio.

WHAT'S ON TAP
• The #4/5 University of Maine men's ice hockey team will play a single game at #11/10 UConn on Friday night.
• Maine is coming off of a 1-0-1 week at home against rival New Hampshire while UConn played a single game against Alaska-Anchorage.
• These teams met last month in Orono, with UConn picking up a 4-2 win before the teams played to a 2-2 tie (with the Black Bears winning the shootout).
• The Black Bears will be playing a 14th consecutive game against a team either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls.
 
A WIN ON SATURDAY WOULD. . .
• Move Maine to 20-5-5 on the year and 12-3-5 in Hockey East contests.
• Bump the Black Bears to 9-14-5 in the all-time series with UConn.
• Give Maine back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2005-06 and 2006-07.
• Give Maine 20 wins in the first 30 games of the season for the first time since 2003-04.
 
SERIES HISTORY vs UCONN
• Maine holds an all-time record of 8-14-5 in the series with UConn after going 0-1-1 in a two-game set at Alfond Arena back in January.
• These two teams met three times last year, with the Black Bears winning the Hockey East series at 2-1-0.
• The first-ever meeting in the series came on Dec. 9, 1977 – a 10-2 UMaine victory.
• Sixteen current Black Bears have at least one point against UConn ... Brandon Chabrier (1-6-7) leads all active players with seven points while Lynden Breen (2-4-6), Josh Nadeau (1-4-5) and Brandon Holt (3-2-5) follow close behind.
 
ABOUT UCONN
• The Huskies sit at 16-10-3 overall after skating to a 5-2 win over Alaska-Anchorage on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
• UConn is8-8-3 in Hockey East play, last playing a conference contest on Feb. 8 when it picked up a 5-4 overtime win against UMass Lowell.
• UConn is 2-2-1 in its last five games and 6-2-2 in the last 10.
• Joey Muldowney (19-13-32) and Hudson Schandor (8-22-30) have both hit the 30-point mark for the Huskies while six total players have at least 15 points each.
• Tyler Muszelik is 10-5-2 in goal, posting a .913 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average in 18 starts … Callum Tung is 5-3-1 with a .929 save percentage and 2.20 goals against average.
• UConn leads the nation in short-handed goals with nine … the penalty-kill unit is 16th (82.7) while the power play is tied 15th (23.2).
 
UP NEXT
• Maine will host Vermont at Alfond Arena next weekend, facing off against the Catamounts on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1.
• The weekend will mark Maine's final regular season home games.
