Adrianna Smith matched her season-high and led all scorers with 26 points as the University of Maine women's basketball team came up short in a 69-56 loss to visiting Rhode Island on Sunday at Skip Chappelle Court.
The Black Bears battled back from down as many as seven to tie the game at 51-51 on a soft hook shot from Smith with 8:00 to play. However, the Rams would outscore Maine 18-5 down the stretch to secure the victory.
Smith finished the afternoon 11-of-20 with two triples to go along with six rebounds and three assists.
Maddie Fitzpatrick added a career-high 10 points in 26 minutes off the bench while adding three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Maine held a slight edge in the rebounding column, 27-26, with 12 offensive boards on the day while hitting 21-of-53 (39.6) from the floor with five triples and a 9-for-10 showing from the free throw stripe.
Rhode Island, who hit 9-of-13 shots in the third quarter, posted a 57.8 percent clip from the floor.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears enter a five-game road trip in search for their first true road win of the season. Maine is led by
Adrianna Smith who currently leads the America East in scoring (18.1) and assists (4.7). Smith, one of 11 nationally who has recorded a triple-double this season, leads the America East with five double-doubles in the season. Smith has turned in nine double-figure scoring performances, five of 20+, this season and is riding a five-game double-figure scoring streak. Smith, second in the America East in rebounding (9.0), ranks 12th on Maine's all-time scoring list and eighth in the all-time rebounding column.
Asta Blauenfeldt, who began the season with a seven-game double-digit scoring streak, ranks 18th in the league in scoring (10.5) and is Maine's top three-point threat ranking eighth in both three-point percentage (35.7) and three-pointers made per game (2.0). Maine prides itself on taking care of the ball. The Black Bears have won the turnover battle in eight of their first 10 games and rank 17th in the country at 12.3 turnovers per game. Maine, which leads the America East at 23.0 three-point attempts per game, ranks tops in the league with a 1.13 assist to turnover ratio.
A LOOK AT FAIRFIELD:
The Stags, selected as the preseason favorites in the MAAC, enter play 5-3 on the season with two losses to ranked opponents at No. 11 Iowa and against No. 8 North Carolina. Fairfield is coming off an offensive explosion in which it registered 93 points in a win at Richmond. The Stags boats the top scoring offense, and 44th best in the nation, at 78.0 points per game. Fairfield is lethal from downtown, ranking sixth in the country with a 41.0 percent from three-point range and the third most three-point attempts (32.6) per game. Fairfield's 13.4 triples per outing lead the country. Kaety L'Amoreaux (19.5) and Meghan Andersen (18.6) rank first and second, respectively, among the MAAC scoring leaders. Christina Pham ranks second in the MAAC, 18th nationally, with 3.14 triples per game and is averaging 10.6 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY WITH FAIRFIELD:
Maine and Fairfield will meet for the seventh time in history, and first since a 2014 showdown in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) quarterfinal. Maine is 0-6 all-time against the Stags and 0-4 all-time on the road in the series. Maine and Fairfield first met 39 years ago to the day, Dec. 12, 1984, a 75-66 victory by the Stags at home. Fairfield is the first of two MAAC opponents this season for the Black Bears who travel to MAAC member Quinnipiac on Sunday. Maine's last win over a MAAC opponent came in 2022, a 73-57 neutral site victory over Niagara.
