Preview: Maine hosts #8 Northeastern for last home series of first semester

The Black Bears will host #8 Northeastern before playing the next five games on the road.

Orono, ME - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team will host #8 Northeastern on Nov 21/22 at Alfond Arena for two Hockey East matchups.

Friday's game will feature a Warmth Drive, where fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used winter apparel to keep local children warm this winter. Saturday will feature a Food Drive in partnership with the Holden Police Department, where fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item. Students in attendance on Saturday will take home a Bobble Head.

BLACK BEARS' LAST TIME OUT:

  • Maine defeated Holy Cross on Friday at Hart Center Arena, 2 to 1. Saturday the Black Bears lost 3-1, for a weekend split with the Crusaders.
  • Sophomore defender Brenna Curl scored her first career goal on Friday, followed by a powerplay goal from Lulu Rucinski.
  • Lila Shea scored Saturday's lone goal.
  • Paige Fong had two assists on the weekend, with Brenna Curl, Gracie Hanson, Haley Ryan and Stephanie Jacob each earning one assist.
  • Kiia Lahtinen played in goal both nights, as she's started all 13 games for Maine this season.

MAINE BY THE NUMBERS 

  • This weekend will be Maine's seventh and eighth games against a ranked team this year.
  • Kiia Lahtinen is fifth the nation in saves with 397, and holds a .923 save %.
  • Maine is third in the nation on the Penalty Kill with a 92.5%.
  • Maine is eighth in the nation in blocked shots with 209. Sophomore defender Kendall Sundby leads the team with 28.

THE MAINE MENACES:

  • Maine's leading scorer is Isabelle Michaud who has three goals and four assists for seven points.
  • Next is Senior Ava Stevenson and rookie Lulu Rucinski who both have two goals and four assists for six points.
  • Michaud is tied for goals-scored with junior captain Lily Fetch (3g, 1a, 4pts).
  • Fetch, Rucinski and Stevenson have Maine's three powerplay goals this season. 

PREVIOUS GAMES WITH NORTHEASTERN:    

  • The overall series record is 10-26-3 in favor of the Huskies.
  • Last season Maine won one of the three games against Northeastern (2-1 Loss, 2-0 Loss and 2-0 Win). 
  • Maine has beat the Huskies three times under Head Coach Molly Engstrom, once each season for three of her 11 ranked wins.

SCOUTING THE #8 HUSKIES:

  • The Huskies have had a hot start (10-2-0) to their season. They started the year ranked #15 and have climbed consistently to #8. In conference play, the Huskies are 7-0.
  • The team's only losses came from the then-ranked #7 Quinnipiac Bobcats.
  • The team's powerplay is fifth in the nation and the penalty kill is second overall.
  • Senior Lily Shannon leads the pack with 19 points (6-13-19) and 4 powerplay goals.
  • Rookie Stryker Zablocki and sophomore Eloise Caron lead the team in goals scored with seven apiece.
  • Goaltender Lisa Jonsson has started in 9 games for the Huskies (8-1-0) and holds a 1.56 GAA and .919 sv %.

Maine travels to Harvard on Nov 28/29 for a pair of non-conference games in Cambridge, Mass. Both games will start at 3 PM at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
