RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team held No. 9 NC State to its lowest point total of the season but it wasn't enough as the Black Bears dropped a 66-47 decision to the Wolfpack on Tuesday evening.
Asta Blauenfeldt finished in double-figures for the 22nd time in her career as she guided Maine with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
Adrianna Smith registered her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists while
Kaliyah Sain chipped in nine points and six boards.
The Black Bears, who outscored NC State in the fourth quarter with a 9-for-18 shooting performance in the fina 10 minutes, finished the game 20-for-69 with six triples.
For the second consecutive game, Maine finished with single digit turnover totals as it gave the ball away just eight times while forcing nine NC State giveaways.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears enter Friday night in search of their first win of the season after opening the season with two losses against strong competition in Saint Joseph's (63-62) and #9 NC State (66-47).
Adrianna Smith, the 2022-23 America East Player of the Year who missed last season due to an injury suffered in the preseason, has returned strong with double-doubles in each of her first two outings. Smith enters play averaging 18.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, all team-highs, on the young season.
Asta Blauenfeldt, riding a seven-game double-figure scoring streak, is adding 16.0 points with a team-best 57.1-percent showing from the floor and a team-high 46.2-percent clip from three-point range.
Sarah Talon is adding 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds while newcomer
Kaliyah Sain is chipping in 6.0 points and 5.5 boards. The Black Bears have posted single-digit turnover totals (4, 8) in their first two outings and enter play ranked first in the nation with just 6.0 turnovers per game. As is custom for the Maine offense, the Black Bears currently lead the America East and rank 28th nationally at 29.0 three-point attempts per game. Amy Vachon enters her ninth season at the helm of the program after becoming Maine's all-time winningest coach last year. Vachon, a five-time conference coach of the year, enters the season with 169 victories.
A LOOK AT VCU:
The Rams enter action 1-1 on the year after defeating Maryland Eastern Shore, 62-48, and most recently dropping a 74-40 decision to Villanova. VCU is led by Mary-Anna Asare who is averaging 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. Asare was named to the preseason All-Atlantic 10 team after earning All-Atlantic 10 second team honors a year ago when she avearaged a team-high 16.0 points for the Rams. No other Ram is averaging double-figure scoring totals with Lucia Sotelgo Miguez and Patricia Augustin next in line in the scoring column at 6.0 points per game each. VCU is averaging just 51.0 points per game through its opening two contests and have given the ball away an average of 24.0 times per outing. VCU was selected seventh in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll after going 12-19 a year ago.
SERIES HISTORY WITH VCU:
Maine and VCU will be meeting for the fourth time in history and the first since 2013. The Black Bears are 0-2 all-time at VCU. In their most recent meeting, the Black Bears dropped an 82-47 decision at VCU on New Year's Day in 2013. Earlier that same season, the two teams played in Maine in a game won by VCU, 74-58. The first meeting in the series came on Dec. 5, 1988, a 70-64 VCU victory on its home court.
