Preview: Maine heads to UMass Lowell to start two-game America East week

The Black Bears will face UMass Lowell on the road, host UMBC at home.

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women's soccer team will kick off a two-game America East week on Thursday night when it travels to face UMass Lowell.
 
Kickoff between the Black Bears and River Hawks is set for 6 p.m. at Cushing Field. On Sunday, Oct. 19, Maine will host UMBC in a 12 p.m. conference clash at the New Balance Soccer Complex.
 
Sunday's game will serve as Maine's Senior Day, with the graduating student-athletes honored in a pre-game ceremony.

ABOUT MAINE
• Maine is 1-2-1 in America East play to go with a 2-6-2 overall mark.
• The Black Bears hosted Vermont this past Sunday, falling to the Catamounts 1-0 on a second-half strike … Maine out-shot Vermont 16-15 in the contest.
• Maine has out-shot the opponent in all four conference contests so far, recording double-digit shot attempts in each outing … in conference games, Maine is first in the conference with 66 shots and second with an average of 6.5 shots on goal per game.
• Emma Nicholson (2-2-6) and Abbey Thornton (3-0-6) are tied for the team lead in points.

ABOUT UMASS LOWELL
• The River Hawks are 4-5-3 overall and 1-2-1 in America East play, falling to first-place Binghamton, 1-0, at home this past Sunday … UMass Lowell has a 1-0 win over UMBC.
• Gaby Eckroth has scored five goals for the River Hawks, with two coming in conference play.
• Rachel Welch has started 10 of 12 games in goal, going 3-4-3 with a 1.30 goals against average, .787 save percentage and three shutouts.
 
SERIES HISTORY vs UMASS LOWELL
• Maine is 9-4-1 in the all-time series with UMass Lowell.
• The teams met twice in 2024, with Maine going 2-0-0 in two games in Orono … during the regular season, Maine earned a 1-0 win behind Abby Kraemer's second-half goal … in an America East Semifinal battle, Kayla Kraemer and Abbey Thornton strikes lifted the Black Bears to a 2-0 victory.
• Current Black Bears Thornton (1-0-2), Jordane Pinette (0-1-1) and Gillian Rovers (0-1-1) have all registered a point against the River Hawks.
• The Black Bears won the first-ever meeting back in 2013, 3-1.
 
ABOUT UMBC
• UMBC will enter Sunday's contest at 6-6-3 overall and 2-3-0 in America East play … the Retrievers topped Bryant, 2-1, at home this past Sunday.
• Payton Schenning has a team-leading nine points from three goals and three assists while Zoe Brossman is second with eight points off of three goals and two assists.
• Schenning has a team-leading 43 shots and 21 shots on goal … Schenning is tops in the America East in conference shots (16_ and shots on goal (10).

• Maine holds an all-time record of 14-6-2 in the all-time series with UMBC.
• These two teams met last season in Maryland, with the Black Bears picking up a 2-1 win … Kristina Kelly and Abbey Thornton scored for Maine in that win.
• Thornton (1-0-2), Julie Lossius (0-1-1), Luise Reinwald (0-1-1) and Rebecca Grisdale (0-1-1) have all registered points against the Retrievers.
• The first-ever meeting came in 2003, with the Black Bears earning a 2-0 win … Maine went on to win the first six games in the series.
