Preview: Women's Basketball back in action Saturday against UMBC

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team continues its three-game homestand when it hosts UMBC on Alumnae Day at Skip Chappelle Court on Saturday at 1 p.m. Limited tickets for the game remain available at GoBlackBears.com/tickets.

Maine has won 16 consecutive home games against conference opponents dating back to the 2022-23 season. Maine has also won three-straight on its home court against the Retrievers.
 
LAST TIME OUT:
ORONO, Maine -- Caroline Bornemann became the 26th player in University of Maine women's basketball (8-10, 3-2 America East) history to reach 1,000 career points as she poured in a career-high 34 points to lead the Black Bears to a 71-58 victory over NJIT (6-11, 3-1) on Thursday evening. The win pushes Maine's home conference win streak to 16.

Bornemann, who reached the 1,000 point mark on a second quarter free throw, posted her 11th career double-double in the win with 34 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a career-high six assists. Bornemann, who had zero turnovers in the contest, finished 14-of-25 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw stripe.

Caroline Dotsey posted 12 points to aid the victory while Olivia Rockwood hit a trio of triples for nine.

Maine dominated the boards, posting a 43-31 rebounding advantage including 17 on the offensive end. The Black Bears shot 28-of-68 (41.2) with a season-low five turnovers, the fourth time this season they have recorded single-digit turnover totals in a game.

A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears rank fourth in the league in scoring (61.1) and sixth in scoring defense (61.6) while continuing to see impressive production from three-point range. Maine ranks 24th in the country, tops in America East, at 8.7 triples per game with a league-leading 25.8 attempts from beyond the arc per game. Maine, 156-464 from three-point range this season, checks in second in the conference with a 33.6 percent showing from downtown. Maine has hit eight or more triples in a game 11 times, including four of its last six, and is 6-1 on the season when it records nine made triples. The Black Bears have also been impressive in ball protection, checking in second among America East leaders with just 13.3 giveaways per game, the tops assist mark (15.8), and a league-high 1.19 assist-to-turnover ratio. Maine is coming off a season-low five turnovers in its win over NJIT. Caroline Bornemann, coming off a career-high 34 point effort in which she tallied her 1,000th career point, ranks among the top-5 in America East leaders in scoring (5th - 12.7) and rebounds (2nd - 7.9). Bornemann, with double-figure scoring in five of her last six, is fresh off her sixth double-double of the season and second in as many games. In conference only action, Bornemann leads all players in conference only scoring (17.4) and rebounding (9.8). Asta Blauenfeldt is adding 9.3 points per game and ranks seventh in the league in both assists (3.0) and three-point field goals made per game (1.4) with a 44.1 percent showing from outside the arc. Blauenfeldt has double-digit scoring totals in three of her last five outings. Paula Gallego ranks first in the league with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio and second at 3.9 assists. Gallego has registered 41 assists to just 13 turnovers in nine games. Olivia Rockwood, adding 7.4 points, ranks second in the America East at 43.5 percent from downtown while also checking in second at 2.1 triples made per game. In league play only, Rockwood is shooting 54.5 percent from downtown with 2.4 triples per outing.

A LOOK AT UMBC:
The Retrievers, under first-year head coach Candice Hill, enter play on a three-game losing streak as they have opened America East play at 0-3 after a most recent 56-39 loss at New Hampshire. UMBC ranks sixth in the league in scoring (58.2) and fourth in defense (58.1). The Retrievers, who rank second in the league at 16.8 turnovers forced per outing, are led by Jordon Lewis. Lewis, the team's lone double-digit scorer, is averaging 11.7 points to go along with 4.5 rebounds. Jaliena Sanchez is adding 9.3 points and a team-high 2.2 assists while Jaden Walker leads the Retrievers in rebounding (5.6) while adding 8.8 points.

SERIES WITH UMBC:
Maine has won 10 of its last 13 meetings against the Retrievers and lead the all-time series, 26-15. Maine is 16-5 on its home court against UMBC and have won three-straight in Orono. The two teams first met on Jan. 24, 2004 with Maine coming away with a 60-45 victory in Baltimore. The Black Bears would go on to win each of the first five meetings in the all-time series. The two teams split last season, with each team winning at home. Maine took the first meeting, 76-47, before falling at UMBC 67-59.
